The engagement of students in school decision-making was initially established through the exercise of democratic representation in school process. However, over time this process was constrained to issues of social participation and thereby, student input into the operations of schools was eliminated. With the advent of a focus on increased school effectiveness, researchers solicited, collected and used student voice as data to inform school practices and plans. (Theresa Saunders, 2016)
Importance of Student Voice:
Education reform and addressing achievement disparities among Black and White students have compelled teachers to generally think relationships with boys are less essential for their academic success. (Dumas and Nelson, 2016)
Meaningful student involvement can be a powerful and effective force for school improvement. It also honors and authorizes the unique perspectives, insights, and needs of all students in the school and engages them in shaping their own educational experiences (Cook-Sather, 2002; Howard, 2002; Raymond, 2001≥
